One of the more recent debates for city planners is whether or not to upzone the U District, that is, to change the zoning in parts of the neighborhood to allow for construction of denser multfi-family/commercial properties. While this move could greatly increase the number of livable units in the area, it may also displace people who live in older, affordable units – the same types of units that may be demolished to make way for newer, bigger and pricier units. Other skeptics and opponents say that increasing housing density in the U District may lead to single family homeowners leaving the neighborhood.
