Is it better to live near a Target or a Walmart? That’s the question that housing data company Realtytrac sought to answer this year (last year, they looked into whether it was better to live near a Whole Foods or a Trader Joe’s and found that houses near the latter experienced an average of 40% home appreciation vs 34% appreciation during the years of ownership). The results this year? Homes near a Target are worth an average of $307K while those near a Walmart average $178K. Homes near a Target also appreciated an average of 27% during ownership vs. 16% for Walmart-area homes. “Better” is quite subjective, since buyers looking for an affordable, convenient house may find a Walmart-area home to “better” fit their needs.
